When a tooth fails to erupt into the dental arch and remains trapped under the jaw bone or gum it is referred to as an impacted tooth. It commonly occurs with wisdom teeth or upper canines, but can also occur with other teeth. Impacted teeth mostly occur due to insufficient space in the mouth but can also be the result of an injury, submerged baby teeth, irregular tooth growth or having extra teeth. Impacted teeth are associated with higher rates of decay and infection and can cause damage to surrounding teeth.
